L(p)ast week...

It was a bit different from the normal with indulgence in various things. Birthday was very normal which is different in my case...I always had a blast in almost all the birthdays since those college days. As age increases, birthday fun decreases :) You can call this as Raji's law of birthday action....Jus kidding!!! I made a sweet for myself but did not feel like having it since it did not come out well :( Friends came over late in the evening and there was a formal cake cutting although I did not enjoy it to the fullest except having the delicious 'Tiramisu' which is my favourite. I was invited to a friend's place for dinner on that day. And the day got over...September looks full on my calendar with the markings on most of the dates...Wedding Anniversaries, B'days, Baby showers...Need to wish people for those which I remember atleast...

Dance practise for the diwali show is shaping out well and I am glad that I am picking it up fast than I expected. Although it is a very new experience of trying out a classical number, I like it :)

Picked out 3 books from the library and in the verge of completing one which is 'Being in love' by Osho. This being the first book of Osho's that I am reading, I have had lot of thoughts that I felt like contradicting as I read. Now, I am curious to read the next one of Osho's that I have put on hold - 'Emotional wellness'. And the other two - 'Tipping Point' and 'Talent Overrated' is yet to be touched...Have a pile of magazines that remains unread and the other gifted books too. Have to get back to the speed, I guess...

Long weekend went off very quick with travel and spending time watching movies, cooking and chatting with Sis. Movie part now...
Malaikottai - With a so called comedy grip of Urvasi and Ashish Vidyarthi's, there's nothing significant to talk about the movie. Priyamani was very homely and Vishal was as usual trying to prove his choreographic abilities by doing so much extensively...
Sakkarakatti - Lokesh, hero's friend is better in dancing than acting. I used to be a fan of him when I was watching MM in Kalaignar TV. Saanthanu - I wondered sometimes why is he trying to speak unnecessarily with a different accent sometimes? Dipali - A dolly :) Vedhika - Wat to say? No idea....The whole movie itself tried to convey something but came out as an utter failure...except the songs...Although Taxi Taxi may be a humongous hit, and 'I miss you da' might have won accolades for the singers, my favourite is 'Marudhaani....'
The Proposal - Watched during the flight journey. Ryan Reynolds as Andy and Sandra Bullock as Maggy...watching two opposite poles like them in the whole movie was a good timepass. I thought that only namma oor movies has the family sentimental in a certain way and this particular movie had something similar when Maggy/Andy's marriage is arranged and Andy's grandma gets the necklace and the wedding gown from the family clan...looked like 'Idhu enga amma kalyanathukku potathu...Andy-a kalyanam paanika poravalukkaga naanga bathirama edhuthu vachirukom...Idhu enga kudumba sothu...Kudumba vizhakkaga vara pora unakke' types....And when Sandy...sorry Maggy runs away from the wedding ceremony justifying her act, the drama played by the Grandma after that...marks a closing act :)

And surprisingly met a college junior in Boston...Couldn't recognize her until she came and told me 'my rapport with juniors' in college. She was excited to talk to me and kept talking for few mins in a flow...:)

Its been years since I played with kids...Sis's friends visited her place and got a chance to play with one of them :) Also, had a great dinner time with them - After having great food in India, this is the best so far, I would say - Sambar, Rasam, Aviyal, Potato Chops, Beans poriyal, Curd rice, Veg Pulav and raitha made a 'wholesome' dinner and ending it with a home made 'Tiramisu' made by my sis...I wish I had hibernated there itself :):)

I was reading Murali's blog on 'Quietitude weighs heavy' and now I could feel that :( Whatever, life goes on...

----NY----

I happen to watch this movie yesterday. I did not read reviews before I watched and I think that's one reason that I liked the movie. There are 3 other things that adds flavor to it - The smart hunk John Abraham, the
gorgoeus looking Katrina Kaif and the story plot. This is the first movie of Katrina that I am watching and I should admit that she is amazingly beautiful! Neil as Omar has done his part well except for some weird
emoticons that he shows at times. When it comes to a police officer role and someone has to pick up from Bollywood, the choice obviously goes to Irfan and he did not make people regret for the choice that was made. I am not sure how much validity lies in the brutality shown to the 9/11 suspects, but John Abraham scores high when he is ill treated in prison. Everytime he was beaten, I was closing my face not to see it and giving a noise as if someone is beating me :) When Katrina says to Neil that she knows what John is doing, When Neil drops down knowing Katrina loves John, When John takes his daugher Dhaanya upstairs not to hear what they talk, all that shown was love. The story plot is good in terms of the inability to guess what would be the next move. On the whole, the movie was good to watch when compared to all other masala, commercial or the usual evergreen love stories. The facts shown at the climax is good as an ending. On the whole, I liked it and my verdict is good!

On 'The best friendship'...

Ok...noone asked me to define this but I thought I will form a series of 'few' liners on few topics this week and so as this.

It comes with
No bias,
No caste,
No religion,
No selfishness

It comes with
An acceptance of who you are,
An acceptance of how you are

It does not count on wealth,
But it does count on wavelength

It grows stronger during bad times,
It grows merrier during good times

It lives forever,
when there is honesty
It dies forever,
when there is dubiety

Books - An inner view

Few years back when life was showing me unexpected ways, twists and turns which was hard to take in, since I was experiencing a hard blow for the first time in all walks of my life, that is when my sis introduced me to this 'Books are the best companions in life. Life changes, you will experience a blend of good and bad, people leave you and you would be left alone at times but books can accompany you anywhere, anytime teaching you what life is about and give you treasures of knowledge'. She did say something in these lines of context which I took very seriously and that's when my reading habit started. During the initial days, it was hard to push myself into that habit and I would be left reading only 1-2 pages of a book a day whereas some of my friends could read a book a day even though it was huge with small case letters than my book which was only few pages with big letters than those of my friends'. Slowly (may be 3 yrs), I too plunged into the habit of voracious reading that I became a counselor to my friends suggesting what kind of books can one read. I used to sit and talk to friends when they come up with a problem and thought I would console them and give them a way with those learnings from the book and relating those to real life. I don't take credits for that :) It all started with something to read where books ranged from novels of Sidney Sheldon to books of RK Narayan (I was told that the language in these books is easy to understand and good for beginners like me) After 2-3 yrs when my reading habit transformed from lacklustreness to voraciousness, I started with Spencer Johnson's 'One minute Manager' and 'Who moved my cheese' which I could get in the platform shops in TNagar for 20 bucks. I became interested in reading the books of personality development or the kind that epitomised life enhancing skills. That changed the outlook of life, my perception towards life and people and as well inculcated a habit of facing anything with a positive sense...all for good! With all these good factors, a magazine called 'Frozen thoughts' was added to my collection. Even now, although its bit costlier than any other magazine here, I am getting it shipped from India.

Why do books entice me? There's a reason...I did a case study/experiment on this . When I did not touch any books for few months and subjected to few changes in life, few happenings that went to an all bad state and was too stressed and things were going haywire without any control...I saw myself devastated, lost all positiveness that I thought I had. Losing temper became a new thing...Decisions did not come with a mature sense...That's when I thought a book could change my life and grabbed one and it did wonders...and I was back with all those I had before...with a positive look towards, with high credibility and energy. And fortunately, got few books as gifts and now I have my own set of books to order in the coming days...Reading books is a hobby, an interest like watching TV/movies. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages. But the weight of advantages in reading a book is more than its disadvantages. It could change life, perception, outlook, thought process and imbibe principles, enhance life, build a maturity level, improve vocabulary and overall a treasure of knowledge. Anyone can read a book but what you take from it is more important than completing it. What a life's experience can teach you in years is what a book can teach you in days. It depends on every individual who reads it, who takes the learning and how it is interpreted and how it is applied. To me, a good read is worth a good deed :)

Note: All my 'book's here relate to the kinds that develop one personally.

Next 2 on my list:
'Outliers' by Malcolm Gladwell
'Talent is Overrated' by Geoff Colvin

What I read recently?
'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coelho

On my reading shelf:
'The 7 habits of highly effective people' by Stephen Covey
'Mindset' by Carol Dweck

A soothing recipe...

When you expect something to happen but the unexpected happens in a negative way, people tend to crib, cry, blame others, speak ill of others etc. Its out of frustration, disppointment, dejection..you can add any word related to it. Most of us do this but I believe that there are 3 important things in life which people should learn to feel inside when things go haywire...
a) This too shall pass....
b) Everything happens for a reason
c) No matter what, life goes on...

The visual trove

There are few people who are unique, who are innovative, who are talented or gifted with a talent...And these people in the below videos fall into one of these categories and they are inspiring. Although these people stand in the news for a certain epoch of time, I still love to hear the speech by Steve Jobs even if it was done 3 years ago. Be in business or anything in life, there are two main things that are pretty hard to have - One is determination and another one is creativity. Only few people have these two in life and they tend to taste the essence of success. Enjoy the videos :)

Steve's commencement speech @ stanford:

Britain's got talent:
Similar to 'American idol', this one had news on Susan Boyle for months and her video got youtube hits in 6-8 digits I guess. But Shaheen's performance speaks it all...the charm of a 12 year old :)

Kavidhaiya? Kadhaiya?...

If it comes out without any thought, is that called a kavidhai? It's been a long time since I wrote a poem or a story and unintentionally, this flew out...

Note: Tamil akshara mistakes are because of the online translating pad...Pls excuse :)

இருட்டு இருந்தா தான் வெளிச்சதோட அருமை தெரியும்;
பணம் இல்லாட்டி தான் அதை சமாபதிக்க வேண்டிய அவசியம் புரியும்;
தோல்வி அடஞ்சா தான் வெற்றியோத அருமை தெரியும்;

The 'F' syndrome

I have my top favorites in anything and everything I do and so as in reading. My top two favorite books are 'It's your ship' and 'Catch me if you can' and now I have a third one to add - It's Robin Sharma's 'The greatness guide'. I have read it more than once but I am still reading it every day. It's like reading one or two chapters every day which usually refreshes my thoughts. There's one such good read recently from this book and it's about the 'F' syndrome. When I used to think or talk about such topics, I always say to myself - Easy said than done. Now, towards the syndrome:

The 4 most significant things in life that we go through almost everyday. I would actually call it as 3 instead of 4 since it's 'fear of failure' which goes hand in hand and can be categorized into one.
Fear of failure - When you fear, you fail. When you cannot accept failure, you fear. Why do people say 'be confident'? Because if you fear, you will fail...you will not execute as you expected. When you talk or sing on stage, if you fear, you will not deliver it quite right. That's a failure when things don't happen as expected. But when I say this, I have got confused at times because I firmly believe that success comes through failure. So, fear of failure should be okay, right? But now, I have an answer - it's okay only when fear of failure and success is understood well

Forgetting - This is the most common factor. It's not forgetting what to buy today or whether I have paid the rent? It's about forgetting what is learnt. When you go for a seminar or when you watch a highly inspiring show, you'll feel rejuvenated and entitled to think that you want to be like that or you want to do that. But after a good night's sleep, all will go away from your mind and you are the same old person going to work, exercise, read, eat and sleep. Once we are out of the moment, we lose it, we forget what we thought at that point. When someone does not have this syndrome, then they are committed to that particular thing. Commitment and consistency in one are powerful factors

Faith - I always think about this when people talk about love or marriage although it's applicable to almost every thing in life. When you have faith on something or someone, you will not question about it. When there is lot of questions, then there is no faith. When you don't have faith, you will not give it a try. When you don't give a try, how will you know whether it will work or not? (So many questions??? ;))

Robin Sharma gave few examples in his book on all these and it's a whole new perspective of transforming one's attitude. It's easy to say but hard to follow. But when followed, I guess that would be an extraordinary life to lead :)

A 'living' guide...

We learn lessons in everyday life from everyone we come across in life. Although few seem to be impractical and hard to apply, sometimes we do follow and sometimes we don't, depending on our comfort zone. Some of them written here are framed by me and few others were from experts in different walks of life...I read, learnt, experienced and found the essence of it.

1. Katradhu Kaiman alavu kalladhadhu ulagaluvu - There is never an end to learning
2. When you don't realize a mistake as a mistake, you will never get a chance to correct it
3. If one door closes, another one opens
4. You can never force anyone to love you. It has to come within
5. Never ask or advise anyone to do something that you wouldn't do
6. In your career, think yourself as a CEO of your project. You will never fail to deliver since the loss is accountable to you
7. Make a self decision on anything. If it goes wrong, you are completely responsible for it. You wont have anyone to blame and you will learn a lot from it. If it goes right, you will be the most happiest person for doing so..
8. If you listen to people who praise you, you should listen to people who criticize you as well patiently, in the same way as you do for the praise you get
9. Never hurt anyone intentionally
10. If you have a misunderstanding with any relationship in your life, stopping to talk is not the solution. If that's the case, no relationship can thrive in this world
11. If you like to do something which is not dependent on anyone, go for it. Never go with the opinion of the mass of people. It's you who is going to get satisfaction out of it
12. Don't rely on a 'give & take' policy in life. You'll fail miserably sometimes. If you feel like giving, do it but do not expect something back
13. If any failure comes to you, don't fret. Failure teaches more lessons than Success
14. Being responsive is a key to connectivity. If you don't respond, be it email, a phone call or anything, you need to realise that it's going to hit you back sometimes when you expect someone to be responsive to you
15. What you sow is what you reap. If you follow this, you will never do a wrong thing in life

The 'Bourne' identity

It's a coincidence that on women's day, I am going to write about two women who inspired me in the recent days. Although they are known celebrities, there are few things that transcended me in terms of inspiration. During those college days, I used to read about Indra Nooyi in newpapers and that led me to read more about her and that's how I got inspired and became a member in her fan club in Orkut :) After that, the chances of getting inspired by a woman was less in my case. But now, I got two women added to that category - Anu Haasan and Chinmayi Sripada.

Anu Haasan - Apart from watching 'Indra' from a movie buff perspective, I did not watch any of the other performances by Anu until KWA reached me. I simply loved the way Anu hosts it and the questions that come from her without any thinking. Apart from those high glam and high accented gals who anchor shows (mostly in Music channels) and those who give boring interviews, KWA was an elixir. Straight from the heart is what Anu speaks, is my thought. An alumni of BITS Pilani, a MBA grad, an anchor, a producer, an actress, basketball player, a globetrotter, a singer, head of an outsourcing concern, owner of Squash'd, a scuba diver, a bunjee jumper and an entrepreneur - Can a woman hold these many roles in life? Although she may not be involved in each of the above terminological activity everyday, it still looks looming on the agenda...And the quote from Anu that I loved - 'There's no third party in one's success. We got to plan and execute'

Chinmayi Sripada - I am an avid reader of Chinmayi's blog which you can see from my blogroll lists. Being a versatile singer is one great thing but to Chinmayi's list, it's not the only thing that she does. She blogs; She anchors TV shows; She is the host of Aaha Kaapi club; She is a classical dancer; She's a dubbing artist; She owns a language translating company; She's a philatelist; She collects coins and spoons; - All these things in one package. Can a woman hold these many roles in life? Well, it looks like an 'yes' in Chinmayi's life.

I have seen people who crib about life and say that they don't have enough time to do things. Either they are lazy or they think those are unwanted things. To me, people who have contradicted that and proved that's wrong have emanated successfully. Well, Chinmayi and Anu are on the latter list and yes, they inspire me for one simple reason - Holding too many things and executing each one effectively which is a very tough task.

'One that rocks the cradle rules the world' - This jus came to my mind :)

P.S.: All these facts on Chinmayi and Anu are collected from those that I have seen or read.

No answers...

There are certain instances when you will feel 'Do I deserve this?' and end up with no answers. But when that certain becomes always, then there is a problem. Books that inject positive thoughts say people ask this question at their bad times and not at their good times when they achieve something. So, it's a problem with people's attitude which I strongly beg to differ. When there is an achievement, there are efforts behind and hence we never ask that question. But when there is trauma which is way beyond your control, we end up with that question. To the question, there are no answers yet :(

Proceeding with what you have and not asking that question is one thing that only people with strong hearts can do. If we look from the present and move backwards on the history pages, those people who were prone to that question but had strong hearts are those who were successful. Few examples, S.Jobs, A.Lincoln, Thomas Alva Edison, Ghajini Muhamad...

But still, I do not have answers to that question. Does anyone have or do you agree what I say?

The 'Thumb' rule

I am not a great lover of pattimandrams or debate programmes but a programme like Neeya Naana tilts me sometimes and I did watch one good episode of NN yesterday. There's one episode that I loved much - Mothers & Daughters. And this latest one is about siblings on how they were/are before/after marriage. The youngest side of siblings quoted that the old ones just change 'topsy turvy' and dont look at their family like they did before in terms of finance, relationship, priorities etc., The oldest side of siblings said that they attain maturity after marriage and gets involved with someone with whom they are going to spend their entire life with, which comes as their preference over others. It was a healthy conversation between both sides and most of the instances that people talked looked so realistic. I am not on one side in particular would be a very diplomatic answer if someone asks me to take a side and talk about it :) Although I would end up agreeing with few things from the younger side like distance in relationship between siblings that comes after marriage life, the expectations and the cute little fights and advices which stands like a 'moodiya thirai' and sounds like that happened in the last jenma, I would definitely take a place on the older side to talk about it. As every other elder one in that arena told, it's the maturity and the preference that changes which at sometimes lead to emotional drama and yearn for those little things like 'You should not take my shirt' or 'the pillow fights' :)

I enjoyed the show and the thumb rule is 'Whatever changes in life, changes will never change and life goes on and on'.

High'lite'

New year has been offering me things and experiences that are new :)
1. Dining experience in the new dining table that looks so simple and cute :)
2. Holy day @ church
3. Watched the nervous 'ticket' gaining experience of a friend
4. Took an arathi (done only once before for cousin's marriage) for a new born kid and raised the symbol of victory in his forehead
5. Made a new dish in exactly 4 mins which ended up very tasty
6. Spending in a pooja room for 10 mins on a normal day (never crossed 2 mins)

Wat's happening to me? The list may not look great or exciting or different in any way, but it's so and so for me.

Looking forward for this year to bring new and enriching experiences...Belated Pongal wishes to all! Heard that Tamil New Year has been changed from Apr 14th to Jan 14th. Who cares? I will still celebrate in my own way on Apr 14th. Wat say?

5 stars & fantasies...

Heard from friends that they have had fantasies of dancing with Asin, walking with Aishwarya Rai, smiling with Surya, bowling to Sachin, cooking with 'Paravai' Muniyamma, sailing with Baywatch beauties along the shores of Miami beach, meeting Madhavan et al...But I have had fantasies about a Musical home. Does it sound weird? Home full of musical instruments like Guitar, Piano, Veena, Flute, Thabla, Saxophone, Drums, Clarinet, Violin. Tats all comes to my mind now. When someone knocks the door, there should be music. When the door opens, there should be music. Music for pooja room - A divine sound with a blend of veena and flute tunes. Music for bedroom - A romantic melody that soothes ears :) Music for hall - I don't need it because that's where my TV is. Music for bathroom - A fast beat song with drums that makes me not to come out of it :) Music for kitchen - A Saxophone or from a Ghazal of Hariharan's voice. Music for dining room - Not much of sangadhis, swarams but the one that feeds a light feel to heart and stomach :) Music for the entertainment room - That makes me dance. I would love to live with music.

And here's a musical feast which I loved it to the core. Flute for its divinity, Veena for its soothing sensation, Ghadam for its thalam and piano for the mild touch on its brim. It was a great improvisation and I was delighted to watch these 5 stars performing here:

The Snow Shivers...

On a snowy day
I walked alone
With gloves and caps on
Pushing my hands on the side pockets
To get rid of the coldness
Bending my head down
To stay away from snow hitting my eyes
Crossing the road
Not knowing a car coming across
In a whisker
I stopped behind
Reached the destination
With a sigh of relief
Shivering in cold
Spluttering away the snow in my shoes
Looked at the mirror
Seeing the red ears
I thought
I wish I had a car

See-Saw...

Tired of rough tides
Knocked up by tough decisions
In the forgiving cloud
Running between thuds
Watching the mountains
Remembering the fountains
I let it go
Wondering so
Life is all about
Giving with no doubt

Came back from the memories
Holding the pleasant ones
Came back from the past
Leaving the tough ones

Feeling rejuvenated
Looking refreshed
With sizzling energy
Towards relieved synergy

Exploring the unknown
Life goes on...

Songs 2 the soul...

There are very few songs that can touch the soul and the heart. To me, these three are the best that fits aptly into this category. In the order that I like, here are those:

Vellai Pookal - I have always thought ARR can sing only songs of high beats but this song in particular has proved me wrong. A song that can rip the hearts apart with its wonderful meaning. It's only available in bits n pieces in the movie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tTnzIMngPIs

Sutrum Vizhi - A bharathiyar song; Great rendition by Hariharan; A Hariharan - AR.Rehman combo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k_bVG1fluw8&feature=related

Uyirum Neeye - Only few years after this song is released, I came to know about it. Another great song and I feel very relaxed and moved when I hear this song (Not sure why?:)) Unni - ARR combo

Unconditional love...

Guess who can give it? Anyone can...will be the answer if you do not understand the deep meaning of the question. But there's only one answer to this question, according to me. Tat's mom, of course :) That's how I have always felt and will feel anytime without any doubt. Although friends and other relations can give a sense of care and affection, nothing can beat that unconditional love of the motherhood.

When you were inside her belly, she did it!
When you are outside the world for the first time and you saw all the new faces around and cried aloud, she made you smile!

When you grew and played very late, she waited for you to come and eat and sleep quietly!

When you fought with your dad that you wanted to go for an Economics group and he didn't accept which made you cry, there she was soothing you and calming your father!

When you told about your crush/love to your mom, she was there waiting nervously to put that before your dad and get all the scoldings on behalf of you!

When you were there with her, she cared!
When you are miles away from her, she still cares and waits to see you with the same love that she showered you with, when you were born!

When you get married, she cries!
When you become successful, she still cries...all out of boundless joy!

What did she earn from all these? Nothing in return! But she never expects anything, judges and hates you for anything that you had done wrong in life.

Does she need you to earn money and success for all that you have been entitled to? Nah...Tats wat most fathers wanted for the money that they have invested on you all those years.

Does she need to soothe her when she is in a family feud? Nah...She can just see your photo and make herself smile and forget all the sorrows...There stands everything in life!

Does she needs you only when she is in pain and not in joy like most of your friends do? Nah...She just needs you to call her once a week and say 'How are you?...That makes her day shiny!

Does she shows love at first and takes everything for granted like your partner? Nah...She just does the former and not the latter.

Does she gives you only those things that she never liked or wanted that your sisters/brothers do? She can even give her expensive necklace or the one thing that she liked the most in her entire life, for the sake that she loves you more than that.

Is she like your relatives who can tell you should have done like this, that and makes you feel a sense of discomfort? Nah...She wants you to enjoy what you do and never want you to get hurt. That's what she wanted in life through you!

Is she like people who give gifts only for the reason that you gifted them? No...Neither does she give you gifts nor do you...That's the whole essence of this 'unconditional love'!!!

Regret or Rejoice?

For the past two months, I did not update my desktop background. This being one of my hobbies and as I used to be consistent in updating, I do not want to miss one for this month. Usually I spend lot of time to get a picture that I like. To me color, message, simplicity of the picture matters a lot. But this time, it was too easy to grab one in a min. and here it is:

Regret or rejoice? It's our choice! Absolutely true...

(For, By, Of) The People...

Being a people's person is neither an easy target nor easy to acclaim. On a high level, there are two kinds of people - People by mind and People by heart i.e. People who go by what their mind says and People who go by what their heart says. There is a clear distinction between the two. On a day to day life, I am sure most of us would have come across both kinds. From what I have seen, I have my own perspective on these people.

People by mind are very judgemental; They always like the material pleasures of life; They can easily hurt people; They carve for money; They are selfish; They have their own set of rules; They cannot help others unless it is beneficial for them; They always think what they do is right; They want to be on the top of the world always; They are mostly successful; They feel superior; They work very hard and get what they deserve; They fight for their rights; They cannot digest failure; They are bold and independent; They are very outspoken; They are mostly honest

People by heart are cool headed; They can lie but they cannot hurt; They are weak in arguments; They enjoy people's company; They carve for money but it doesn't come to them easily; They aim for success but never attain it; They crib most of the times; They care for people; They are generous; They can sacrifice anything in life; They think they are inferior sometimes; They cannot see someone cry; They judge people at times but never show; They think this is how life is; They cannot tell the fault in a person even if it is their close friend

Major difference between the two is - Former enjoy the mundane life which they have made by themselves whereas the latter enjoys the life which has been made for them :) Don't ask me which category I belong to! Where do u belong?
